Inspired by Grimm’s Snow White and Jack Weatherford’s The Secret History of the Mongol Queens, the two solo pieces express the positions and representations of women and power. Through text, movement, puppetry, and song, they invite the spectator to come along on a journey of images and sensations. This form of storytelling focuses on a holistic awareness of the body during the performance rather than on a single text-based narration to find its train of thought. This form of work is particularly well adapted to address social issues by creating an intimate and lively connection with the audience.

The culminating performance of Kalamazoo College’s “Theatre and Social Justice” themed season, Kahani was based on the Hindi novel Mai, by Geetanjali Shree, Booker award winning Hindi writer. Kahani used many different methods of storytelling to explore the implicit power and hierarchical structures within the family and society. Kahani was produced during a fellowship at the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership. Following the performances at Kalamazoo, the students and three faculty members travelled to NIRMAN, in Varanasi, India for three performances in different locations.
